Listen Labs, a three-year-old market research startup that uses voice AI to conduct customer interviews, recently signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation with Menlo Ventures set to lead. But that round never closed. Listen Labs walked away from the signed deal, a rare and generally frowned-upon move in venture capital.
The financing likely collapsed because of acquisition talks with Salesforce. The CRM giant has been in discussions to buy Listen Labs for around $2 billion, according to Business Insider. The discussions are not finalized and may not result in a deal.
Listen Labs is one of the leading startups in the rapidly growing field of automating customer research with AI. The company has about $30 million in annualized revenue, roughly three times more than competing startup Simile, which predicts human behavior using AI models.
The situation highlights a growing tension in the AI startup ecosystem: when acquisition interest from a tech giant overtakes the venture funding path, founders face a choice between independent growth and a potentially lucrative exit. For Listen Labs, the Salesforce talks appear to have won out over the Menlo-led round.
Walking away from a signed term sheet is unusual and can damage relationships with investors. But if the Salesforce deal materializes at $2 billion, it would represent a significant premium over the $1.5 billion valuation and validate the voice AI market research category as a whole.
