Snorkel AI, a startup that helps AI labs and enterprises build training datasets and simulated environments, has raised a $350 million Series E at a $3.5 billion valuation. The new round, led by Insight Partners and S32, valued the seven-year-old startup at nearly triple the $1.3 billion valuation it commanded during its $100 million Series D.
The raise underscores how the AI industry's bottleneck has shifted from model architecture to data quality. As frontier models grow more capable, the companies building them are competing intensely for the high-quality, domain-specific datasets that determine real-world performance.
Snorkel's platform lets organizations programmatically label, curate, and synthesize training data without relying on manual annotation at scale. The company has seen surging demand from both AI labs building foundation models and enterprise teams fine-tuning models for specific verticals like healthcare, finance, and defense.
CEO Alex Ratner, who co-founded the company out of Stanford's AI lab, has positioned Snorkel at the intersection of two major trends: the growing need for synthetic data as real-world data becomes harder to license, and the rise of agentic AI systems that require simulated environments for training and evaluation.
The company plans to use the new capital to expand its simulation capabilities and international operations, with particular focus on serving the defense and healthcare sectors where data quality requirements are most stringent.
