Google may be preparing to let its Gemini AI make personal phone calls on your behalf, a significant expansion of its existing "Call for Me" feature that currently handles only business calls like restaurant reservations and appointment confirmations.
Android Authority discovered a "Gemini Calling" introductory screen in an APK teardown, with examples including "Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late" and "Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner." Based on those examples, the feature appears limited to basic, text-message-like calls rather than full conversational AI — Gemini would deliver a short scripted message, not navigate a complex back-and-forth dialogue with the person on the other end.
The teardown also revealed granular permissions for Gemini actions within individual apps, including what appear to be phone-call permission settings. These would let users choose which app capabilities Gemini can access, potentially including an opt-out for incoming automated calls from the feature. However, as Android Authority notes, it is also possible Google might not publicly release this expansion or the granular Gemini app settings at all.
Google has not confirmed whether the expansion will ship publicly. The company's existing Call for Me feature launched in 2024 and has been gradually expanding its capabilities since then. A personal-calls extension would raise new questions about AI acting as a proxy in human relationships — even for something as simple as telling your mom you're running late, the question of whether a machine should deliver that message carries weight.
