Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on August 11 that the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th Google service to reach that scale alongside Search, Gmail, Android, Maps, Chrome, Play, and YouTube. The jump came less than a month after Google reported 950 million monthly users in its second-quarter earnings call on July 22, and follows a growth curve that started at 400 million users in May 2025, reached 650 million by October 2025, and hit 900 million at Google I/O in May 2026.
Google shared usage patterns alongside the milestone: 63% of users now interact with Gemini through voice rather than typing, one in five Gemini Live sessions involve screen sharing or live camera feeds, and the app generates more than 150 million images daily. More than 100 million of Gemini's monthly users are on iOS, with Google noting macOS users prompt the assistant roughly twice as often as other platforms. The announcement did not disclose how many of the billion users pay for a subscription.
The milestone puts Gemini alongside OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion monthly users in June 2026, though reports suggest ChatGPT's growth has been slowing while Gemini keeps gaining ground through its deep integration across Android, Chrome, Search, and Workspace. The announcement landed the day before Google's Made by Google hardware event, where deeper Gemini integration across the Pixel 11 series was widely expected.
